Trial and error 2

There are 40 students going to the library. each girl borrowed 5 books and each boy borrowed 3 books. The girls have 128 more books than boys. How many girls are there ? 

Let all students be girls 

40 x 5 = 200 books 

Difference= 200-128 = 72

Sum of each = 5+3 =8

72/8= 9 boys

Guess And Check( Excess and shortage Questions)

Example 1

The Technique of handling will be finding the number of people participating is found by using (excess + shortage) / (difference each)
number of people = (excess + shortage) / (difference each)

I have some sweets. If packet them into groups of 6 I will have 4 extra sweets. If I packet them into groups of 7 I will have 3 sweets short. How many sweets do I have ?


Short + excess =4+3 = 7
Difference = 7-6 =1

Number of packets = 7 divide 1 = 7 groups

total sweets = 7 x 6 + 4 = 46 sweets

Question 1

I have some pens to be share by a few children. If each child gets 3 pens, there will be 2 pen left. If each child gets 4 sweets, there will be 3 sweets short. How many children are there in a group? How many sweets are there altogether?

Question 2

There are about 40 to 50 people attending a class. If the people are grouped into groups of five, there will be 3 people extra. If they are grouped into groups of of six, there will be 5 students short. How many people are there?

A group of stones are grouped into bags. If there are 4 stones in each bag there will be 4 stones extra . There are 5 stones in each bag there will be 3 stones short. How many stones are there altogether ?
